Q. How do you validate your pages?A. Dr.HTML   http://www.doctor-html.com/RxHTML/
Run your pages through the Single-Page Analysis

Q. I have noticed that professional or commercial web addresses do not end with html. Did I miss something?
A. If it is an index file it does not have to have index.html at the end. http://vu.org/index.html is the same as vu.org. EclecticEagle.org is the same as http://eclecticeagle.org/index.html
Much nicer just to use EclecticEagle.org

Q. Is it correct to make changes to web pages and "overwrite" onto server? A.  Yes overwrite the file when you upload the changes.

Q. Using Internet Explorer, refresh button doesn't always refresh the page. A.  use Shift+Refresh
or use F5 to refresh
or hit the Go button next to the address window.

Posting URLs Just a note about posting and reading posted URLs. I know this is all new to many of you so a bit here about posting and going to URLs. One sure way to be sure you post the correct URL is to open your page in a browser and copy and paste the URL out of the Location/Address bar and paste it on the Message Board. Barring that- When you post your URL it is best to print the full URL starting with the http://
double check the url after up input, before you hit that Post! button. Did you add the www. and the .net or .com or .org Did you type in the same case as the posted page?
If you try to view a page from a URL posted here and you get a 404 - can't find page error, look at the URL. Did it pick up the period at the end of the sentence the person posted when you copied it? Did it get posted correctly in the first place? Is the .html or .htm at the end missing from a filename? In most cases it is a typo or missing information in the URL rather than the page itself not working.
And I for one always want to know when anyone finds anything in err on any of my pages. Nothing more embarrassing than having an obvious error and no one tells you about it.

Q. Page 255 (Windows Me for dummies) states: "Paint no longer saves files in PCX format. And it saves them only in BMP format. It will open BMP, JPG, and GIF files, though." What does PCX mean?

A.  Way back when live was grander, PAINT was PAINTBRUSH and the graphics format it used was called .PCX... There were, in them grand old days, fights everywhere to establish proprietary formats for graphics and fonts. A couple of court rulings later, and the font issues seemed to dissipate. Then the big push for internet came along and file size/compression schemes became more important than proprietary format (except for GIFs)... and then MS established its Bit Mapped Pictures (BMP) which incorporated some of the features of other formats... as well as readily fitting into the MS environments.
So, PCX is just a graphics format that has all but bit the dust in the standards wars.

Q. Checking for corrupt files

A.  If your using Windows98 there is a file installed by windows called “SFC.exe” by double clicking on it you can find out if any of your system files are missing or corrupted. It's located C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SFC.EXE

A good thing to do with NotePad and many other programs
is to add them to your "Send To" folder,
so you can right click a *.html or other file and choose "Send To"
then choose "NotePad" making it much easier to access them from Windows Explorer or My Computer.
First locate your "Send To" folder should be C:\Windows\Send To just so you know where it is.
Then look in C:\Windows\System and find notepad.exe file,
right click notepad.exe file and drag it to C:\Winodows\Send To,
release the right mouse button and choose "Create Shortcut here".
That's it your done, now right click on a text file like *.txt, *.log, *.html etc,
then choose "Send To" Notepad should now be in the list of options and ready for use.
If you file extensions are not showing in MyComputer or Windows Explorer, open MyComputer, click View then Folder Options then View Tab then uncheck box that says "Hide file extensions for known file types". all file extensions should now show.

Food for Thought  I think I have figured out one of my mistakes. Maybe some of you have been trying to do the same thing. I think I may not be making progress as quickly as I would like because I am getting too involved in trying to use too much text, graphics, pictures, backgrounds etc etc. My hint is keep it simple (kiss) while we are learning and then build as we gain experience. :)

Q. When I look at the source of my page in Geocities and other free web host sites, it is different from what I have sent up or upload. Can anyone tell me why my html file is being changed?
A.  That is the ad banner coding the host adds. Nothing you can do about it. Just be sure if you are saving the source of a page to edit, that you remove that coding before you reupload the changes.

Q. Do we need to post our URL's someplace before we make the great changes so others can see our before as well as our after work? I'm getting ready to post my new improved site, but it will replace the old one. I don't want to take down the original if it has to be seen. Thanks.
A.  If you have room on the server where your web page is posted (such as GeoCities, etc.), there is no need to delete your original web site. Just add the pages of your new 'enhanced' web site using different names from the original so they don't overwrite them -- then post the URL of your new pages. If you want, you can also link them to your old pages to show the "before and after"!

Q. Could you provide a definition of bandwidth? A.  Bandwidth is like water in a 1/4 inch VS 1/2 inch hose. The more bandwidth (hose width) you have, the more information (water) can pass through.

A.  From the dictionary-
1 the capacity for data transfer of an electronic communications system ; especially : the maximum data transfer rate of such a system.
2 The amount of data that can be sent through a given communications circuit per second
3 The available "opening" through which information can pass. In audio, the bandwidth of a device is the portion of the frequency spectrum that it can handle without significant degradation. In digital communications, the bandwidth is the amount of data that can be transmitted in a given period of time.
4 The amount of information that can be transmitted over a computer network at a given time. The higher the bandwidth, the more data can pass over the network

Q. My ISP allows me 5mb web page at no extra charge. Can you give me an example of how much space this is?
A.  Hard to tell you that because it could be hundreds of pages of just text but when you start uploading sounds and images and all the other things everything changes. But 5Mb is plenty for this class.

Q. Will I still be able to access the lessons if I don't complete the assignments on time?
A.  The lessons will remain posted on the VU web site until the end of the term. If you are not planning to apply for CEU credit, don't worry about rushing through them to catch up.
I suggest you either save all of the lessons to your computer or print them out and then you will have them and can study and learn when you have the time.
A.  Lessons normally remain posted until the next Calendar is announced. I would suggest saving them to disk. This is what I do. I put each class on its own disk. I stick a new floppy in a: drive and then go to the lesson page I want. In IE click on File/Save AS. Be sure the SAve As file Type : Is Web, complete. That will save the text and graphics. Using the complete option will save the images in one folder and the html listed outside folder. To view click on the .html file and it will open in your browser. Viewing can be done offline.

Q. What is my Geocities URL?

A.  What is your geocities name? One of mine is eaglemcw so my geocities URL will be http://www.geocities.com/eaglemcw/
Because Geocities needs to have an index.html page what you may see at yours now is just the "splash" page they make. This is what I suggest. Open your first html page in notebook and SAVE AS index.html. That will rename your first page to index but also keep a copy of notebook1.html or whatever your page was called. Remember to now open the index.html to edit your first page.
Now with that renamed, go to geocities/file manager/ Under Advanced Tools go to Upload and FTP. You can use the EZ Upload on the left.
Upload that index and that is what folks will see when they go to www.geocities.com/yourname

The information about FTP there at geo's filemanager is just the information you need to add to whatever separate FTP program you might have.

A.  Using your web browser, enter the your URL in the address window, if you do not have an index.html file in your directory be sure and specify which file you want opened at the end of the URL

http:\\members.yahoo.com\username\pagename.html

if you want to just use

http:\\members.yahoo.com\username\

then rename your first page you want everyone to see index.html and it will come up with out naming it in the URL.

Q. Shortcut to Notepad Tutorial- Dowie made a page with instructions for making a shortcut to Notepad for easier accessing when editing pages.
http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Valley/5425/shortcut.html

Q. Another language?      Hey, I register some strange symbols in the chat. Can anyone explain me, what a "z-" in front of one´s name means? Or what LOL is for? Is there a vocabulary of these words available on the net?

A.  When we meet as a group, we ask students without any questions to put a z before their name to indicate that they have no questions. To do that-you would type /nick z-Hynek. If you do have questions leave your name as it is when you enter.

A.  Certain acronyms have become popular for use in on-line chat and email for two main reasons:
1. To save your fingers from typing so much!! :-)
2. Because the person you are "talking" to can't see your facial expression or tone of voice and doesn't always know if you are serious or just kidding about something!
There are hundreds of acronyms and emoticons (also know as smilies) in use -- but you can find the most popular ones at:

Those funny little "symbols" that often appear in E-mail and on IRC are "Emoticons". They are "expressions" used because you can't see the person who is sending you a message and you may be uncertain whether they are serious or joking with you.
To view, tilt your head to your left shoulder and they will appear like smiles, frowns, etc.
There are hundreds of variations on these -- a few of the most common ones are listed here from Otter's site:
:-) Your basic "smiley" :-( A "pout", sad or upset

;-) A "Winkie" for a flirtatious
or sarcastic remark
:-| "Indifference",
not a smile or a pout!

:-/ "Undecided" or skeptic 8-) User is wearing "glasses"

Q. I built a web page on my work computer and would like to send the files to my home computer but I am so inept in the way computers work, I can't do it, it only sends it as a web page. Is there some way around this or can I just view the source and copy to a file in my home computer?
A. 1. Email the page to yourself.
2. I saved my files to my floppy disk at work and I took it home. I open my browser and when to file/Open file selected my "A" drive and selected my html file. I also edit the files on my "A" drive. Now, I can work at home and at work on my files

3 ways to move files

A.  1. You can move files from one computer to another by copying to a floppy then from the floppy to the other computer.
2. You can send the file as an attachment on an email and view the source and copy that or save as html file.
3. You can copy the html and paste to the email and repeat on the other computer.

Q. Can I save my work on disk? A. You should be able to save to floppy with no problems. When you work on them and want to view them in your browser, you will just need to remember to open from the floppy drive

Q. How do I make IE my default browser? A. Start Explorer, if it is not set as you default browser you should get a message asking if you want it set to your default, just click yes. If you don't get that message, highlight any HTML file, hold down shift key and right click it, "Open with" should be one of the selections, click it, in the window that comes up find Explorer in the list and highlight it, make sure there is a check mark in the little box below the list of the left side, click OK, if Explorer doesn't show up in the list click the "Other" button and locate the IEXPLORE.EXE file and double click it, again make sure there is a check in the check box, and then click OK.

Frequently Asked Questions and Answers
Check out "Otter's Place For FAQS" "Otter's Place For FAQS" http://vuweb.net/htmlzone/otter/otter_faqs.html
It is a listing of easy to follow tutorials written by VU instructors and students on all HTML subjects (browsers, coding, graphics, etc.
Q. Open with command
I prematurely checked the "always open files of this type with this application". Now when I click on the html file in my folder in Explorer it opens notepad instead of the browser. How can I undo this? If I can? A. Highlight any HTML file, then old down your shift key and right click the file, in the menu you will see one option named "Open With" click it, in the window that opens find your browser and highlight it, there is a little check box just bellow the list that ask if you want to use this every time, make sure it does have a check mark, then click the OK button, your done : )

Q. Dithering
Went to www.lynda.com/hexh.html Can you please define the term "non-dithering"? A. Lots of information about colors here which hopefully will answer your question.
VisiBone  http://www.visibone.com/color/faq.html   For different operating systems and browsers, you should use the "browser-safe" palette which is available on many of the color sites like Lynda's or the Visibone Color Lab.

Q. Need to set browser default ??? ...when I saved my file notebook1.html...it showed up in my HTML file with the Netscape icon next to it...why? I was using my Explorer browser...do I have a default set someone that causes them to be saved in Netscape? Because for this class...I don't think I want that. Or will it not make any difference at all? I did use Netscape to build my website at Tripod, but want to build this one with Explorer.
A.  Start Explorer, if it is not set as you default browser you should get a message asking if you want it set to your default, just click yes. If you don't get that message, highlight any HTML file, hold down shift key and right click it, "Open with" should be one of the selections, click it, in the window that comes up find Explorer in the list and high light it, make sure there is a check mark in the little box below the list of the left side, click OK, if Explorer doesn't show up in the list click the "Other" button and locate the IEXPLORE.EXE file and double click it, again make sure there is a check in the check box, and then click OK.

As you start working on your new web pages, you will be making changes in notepad
and then going to your browser window to see how they look.
Two important things to keep in mind --
1. After you make the changes in notepad, be sure to 'save' your .html file again
2. When you look for the changes on your browser -- you will probably have to hit the 'Reload' button before they will appear on the screen
Often students think the edited changes aren't taking place because they don't show up on the browser
Your browser will read the last version that was saved to it (whatever is in the cache) unless you tell it differently!!

View Source

Q: ...when I pulled up the Source, all I see is the source for the AOL frame at the top of the page.
I am attempting to view it with IE5.1. I DO see the text, blue on a black background, but the graphics are broken.
Is this some problem between my browser and AOL, or am I doing something wrong?

A: There is a trick to viewing the code on a page that is loaded within a Frame. Place your cursor anywhere on the background (stay away from links and images when you do this) and RIGHT click your mouse....choose View Source from the menu that pops up and like magic you will see the Source code for the page that you're looking at.
A: In Netscape 4.7 you right click on the frame and choose "Open frame in new window" then view source from that page.
In Netscape 3.04 your out of luck, you have to figure out the name of the frame and then change the URL in the address window to that frame and that frame only then view source on that page. Q: I can't figure out how to print the source codes I look at. They either fill the entire window -- and I can't get at the print command -- or else, when the window becomes smaller, I seem able only to print the page for which the code was written

A: Sounds like you are using Netscape because in IE when you view source the default is for it to open in a notepad which does have a print command.
In NS 4.7 if you right click on the very top bar of the View Source info that opens you will get your Restore option so you can resize the screen if you can't see the Restore/Maximize buttons in the upper right.
Ok with the Source open first you need to highlight it so hit Ctrl A. Then hit Ctrl C to copy it and the go to a notepad. There you can use Ctrl V or right click and paste it. Now you can print it.

Domain

Q: What about the URL? Does it cost money to have a .org address? And how do you get it connected to your page besides?

A: I think you are asking about a domain name. They cost from $5.00 to $75. You can get a domain name from Namesecure.com.

A: What you need to do, is get a host server that will turn your domain name into a URL. I use IXwebhosting and 1and1.com

Q: Is there anyway I can use my domain for free? ie. they do allow a forwarding address...should I have the site forwarded to geocities and then anyone who logs on will automatically connect to my web page already established for free on geocities?

A: I am not sure how Geocites works, but I am think they also have a fee, for using your name. Best to check everywhere you want to go, what their rules, charges are.

Zip

It says to download and unzip, but I don't know what that means.

WinZip to unzip things
http://www.winzip.com/downhome.htm

Q: I uploaded all of it to the web and I am having trouble with the index file. How do I make my homepage show up on the web? Do I make it the new index.html?<

A: If your page server requires an index, you can rename my first page to index.html.
Also remember to change any links you have that go back to the index.

OR you can just make a 'dummy' index. I just make a basic index.html Similar to this. This way I don't have to change links.
<HTML>
<HEAD>
<TITLE>index</TITLE>
</HEAD>
<BODY BGCOLOR="#FFFFFF" TEXT="#000000">
Index
</BODY>
</HTML>

Upload it.

I wanted to share with everyone the name of a book which I've been reading in conjunction with this class--in addition to the already suggested book. "Teach Yourself Web Publishing with HTML 4 in a Week" by Laura Lemay. Along with the book that was suggested, this book has been a lot of help to me!

I purchased a little book called "HTML 4 for Dummies" Quick Reference. It's small and has all the tags and explanations in easy language. What I like best about it is that the front two pages contain 216 hex numbers for colors to use on your web page with samples of the colors beside them. Be careful though! The colors don't show up the same way on every computer, but it's still a big help!

BOOKMARKS- Ever lose your bookmarks? I have, one too many times before I learned this trick. I now regularly make a page of my bookmarks.
This is how to do it. In Netscape go to Bookmarks/Edit Bookmarks. Edit your bookmarks- by that I mean to make sure they are filed where you want them and they all have names you can identify them by.
You can change the name of the bookmark without changing the URL of the link. Hilight the bookmark you want to change. Right click and go to Bookmark Properties, and rename.
Once your bookmarks are the way you want them go to file/Save As/ and save. This will save it as an HTML file and you will now have a page of links complete with hotlinks for the bookmarks. You can even put this link on your personal toolbar for quick reference.

I especially like the idea of e-mailing myself pages I want to go back to.

Don't store unused javascript after the closing </HTML> tags thinking you are storing it. It will still cause javascript errors.

cookies

Q: I do have IE configured to accept cookies, and for the longest time, I didn't have to re-enter my password. Now, suddenly I do. Not a big deal, but does anyone know why?

A: As old cookies from VU and other sites expire, they drop out of the cache and new ones need to be set, which may require a new login. If you are asked to log in more than once in a short time, it usually means that your browser is not accepting the updated cookie and the settings should be rechecked to avoid redundant logins

Q:   Can you look at someone's style sheet and if so how do you figure out the url?

A:  View the source of the page in question, if they're using a linked style sheet, then you should see the name of the file, i.e.:
<link REL="StyleSheet" href="style.css" TYPE="text/css">

If the url of the site is
http://www.somesite.com/
then the url of the style sheet would be
http://www.somesite.com/style.css

You can also find the style sheet documents in your local cache, if you're running Windows and MSIE, look in the "Temporary Internet Files" folder in the Windows directory, look for files with the file extension .css, open these up in Notepad.

Q. Each time I fill out a form I get a warning from Netscape to the effect that it isn't secure. I sent the form anyway - just wondering why I'm warned each time. I go back and clear the form after I send it. What difference does it make??? A.  That is because of the way you have your security settings on your computer. It is basically a reminder that your email information is now being transmitted and isn't secure. This is a good thing.

Q. I need to be able to process e-mail so that data sent as replay by a form may be input to a data base table, (.dbf file)

Otherwise; I want a mail with a specific SUBJECT to be processed according to specific instructions, say, send an automatic reply or so. A.  Go to Response-O-Matic and try out their free form service. In the examples there is information on how to set up the form so you can use the information in a database. As I remember it is in the advanced or optional section which explains different things that you can do. http://www.response-o-matic.com/

Q.  Forms, button alignment - In using buttons and check boxes how do you keep them aligned when your option word or words are not all the same length. In the example under music options they are aligned neatly. I want mine to be in the center and they don't stay aligned A.  The music options are aligned neatly because they are left aligned. I suggest using a table to line things up. For me, this works best. Here's an example of what I meant. Check the source: https://www2.security-one.com/home/medstata/orderonline.html

Q. I am trying to get my forms to display in columns using tables but they aren't aligning up properly. Any good tutorial regarding this available? A.  http://www.pagetutor.com/pagetutor/makapage/index.html

Q. : Forms Replies - I AM confused about forms replies...I use Earthlink so I can't use a CGI to get my replies. I tried to set it up for email response but all it does is bring up and email message window (like a regular mailto)
A.  I noticed on your forms page you have your tags coded like this.
<INPUT TYPE="TEXT"NAME="email"SIZE="25"VALUE="Type your email address here">
After each closing quotation mark there should be a space before the next attribute, like this
<INPUT TYPE="TEXT" NAME="email" SIZE="25" VALUE="Type your email address here">

Mapping from scratch
... had to make it from scratch. The map is at http://www.geocities.com/istaraa/vu/homework.html
Here's how I did it:
1. Draw outline of bookshelf with marker pen
2. Scan it in
3. Open in MS Photoeditor and reduce size
4. Cut and paste to MS Paint. Fill in colours
5. Reopen in MS Photoeditor. Convert to gif. Convert to 256 colours. Make transparent.
6. Move cursor to each corner of the "books"=rectangle hotzones and take down coordinates.
7. Upload the html and the gif, and there you go!

Q. Image map has the border=0 so why are the lines showing up in IE 5.5, they appear after you click on the map? t A. Insert the following inside link references:
onfocus="if(this.blur)this.blur()"

I.e.:
<a href="http://www.somesite.com/" onfocus="if(this.blur)this.blur()">Some site</a>

Q. MapThis Problems - I have finally got an image that Map This accepts and did the polygrams (whatever), circles, and rectangles and added the url's. But...... I can't get the dang thing to upload properly to tripod.com. All it does is comes up with a broken image picture. A. Did you upload the image you used on it's own? as well as your HTML page it's self ?

Q: Mac users -
Problem - how to get the apostrophe to display correctly when you pull the file up in netscape 4.6.

I use SimpleText to develop the file with the HTML Tags. When we use an apostrophe in simpletext, it is displayed correctly as follows:

<A HREF="qualification.html">Qualification's Statement:</A><BR>

When you load the file in netscape 4.6, the above words are displayed as follows and the apostrophe is displayed as a special symbol that resembles (). The display resembles this:

Qualification()s Statement

If you surround the words in quotes ("xxxxx's") then the Apostrophe is displayed correctly, but the "" marks are also displayed.

<A HREF="qualification.html">"Qualification's Statement":</A><BR>

Then this is what is displayed when loaded in Netscape:

"Qualification's Statement"

So, there has to be some special way to get the browser to load the apostrophe correctly.

A: In place of the apostrophe put an ampersand,number symbol,039,semicolon.

A: Are you using the ' (apostrophe) on the keyboard or are you using the OPTION SHIFT ] keys or the Key Caps to get the apostrophe? If so that won't work on HTML only works on letters in SimpleText, ClarisWorks, AppleWorks, Word and etc.

Q: Does anyone know how I change the settings on my printer so it won't print the backgrounds?

A: If you are using IE 5, look under TOOLS|INTERNET OPTIONS|ADVANCED
Scroll down to the Printing section and uncheck the box that says Print Backgrounds.

If you are using Netscape, from the File Menu go to Page Setup. There is a box at the top left called Page Options. Make sure the box to Print backgrounds is not checked if you do not want the backgrounds to print.

For pages which have a dark background and light text, you will also want to check the option to have Black text.

Printing

Q: How do I print individual Bulletin Board messages?

A: Drag your mouse over the message you want to print in the left column to highlight it. Right click on the message and Print.

Also, remember to indicate on your printer source to "print only the selected frame" (or something like that)
